The astonishing evolution of AR make-up : Chanel announced in February 2021 the launch of a new app. Called Lipscanner, it allows users to virtually test lipstick shades or to find among the luxury house’s references the color closest to the customer’s wishes.
Chanel innovates in augmented reality. The luxury house unveiled a new app on Monday, February 22, available for free on the App Store. Lipscanner has two main features.
Increasing online sales of AR make-up
The first, Virtual Try, allows you to test different colors of lipstick on yourself. Interestingly, this service is not new, but its launch is relevant. As customers shrink in the store, the virtual try-on can increase online sales and reduce the number of product returns.
Find the right color to go with your outfit
The second feature, Color Picking, is more innovative. The user begins by identifying a color that she likes on an object. For example, she wants to match a lipstick with a sweater or a purse, or a photo. Lipscanner reads the shade via the smartphone’s camera. The application then proposes to determine the shade closest to that which has been identified among all the colors of the Chanel lipstick universe, that is to say more than 400 products available in several colors or finishes.
Based on artificial intelligence technologies, this feature could appeal to users by saving them a lot of time when looking for a precise shade.
Devices that can also be deployed in physics
Virtual fitting applications or services are multiplying. YSL customers have access to a similar feature, called “Perso”. Other brands, such as Sephora, Benefits or Amazon are already offering to use augmented reality for makeup references. This device has the advantage of being also available in stores, as at the Nordstrom flagship, and that L’Usine Digitale was able to test in 2020. It eliminates the samples dedicated to fitting, which is not negligible in time of Covid-19.
Other apps like YouCam Makeup are pushing virtual try-on functionality with the ability to purchase one or more products, as a great feature of AR make-up trends. Google for its part announced in December 2020 a new feature to try in augmented reality makeup references, and available in the Google app on iOS and Android. To offer this new experience, the American giant has joined forces with major brands such as L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, MAC Cosmetics, Black Opal and Charlotte Tilbury.
